The next best thing to a recommendation from a friend whose taste you trust is a detailed description from someone who seems to enjoy the same amenities that you do. Almost as helpful are the reviews that are now available on many web sites, especially when there are several for a single property. TripAdvisor provides recommendations for all types of accommodations while Homeaway and VRBO focus on apartments and villas. The travel sections of many publications include recommendations for accommodations. Some of my favorites follow.
The travel section has excellent articles, such as 36 hours in a particular city and in-depth articles on many areas in Italy. You can also select travel guides to many locations. The Travel section is found in the Lifestyle section. Journeywoman’s Girl Talk, Italy This section of the Journeywoman's website contains an assortment of articles that can be very useful to the population in general, including restaurants in Venice and accommodations in Florence. San Francisco Chronicler: Follow the Reader The "Follow the Reader" recommendations are archived. They contain many excellent, detailed recommendations even if a few years old. You can search the archives by year or the whole collection. This site offers excellent travel articles and city guides, and the British perspective can be refreshing. This British newspaper’s website also contains excellent travel articles on Italy. You can search their archives, too. The travel articles of the Financial Times cover the major cities as well as almost known but special places, including a recent article on some Mediterranean islands, including Favignana off Trapani, Sicily.
In addition to articles, this publication also offers guides to cities and areas of Italy. These guides describe a range of hotels, with prices ranging from moderate to expensive. This website contains detailed descriptions of many destinations in Italy with day trips made to other places. Each trip description recommends hotels, restaurants, and attractions. The couple has shifted their focus to other counties in recent years. Nevertheless, the Italy articles retain their usefulness. This website is the compilation of travel recommendations, apartment and villa reviews, trip reports, and basic information for travel to many countries. The section on Italy is especially strong. |
