Where to Eat in Florence

Florence is filled with a great variety of restaurants, trattorias, ristorantes, pizzerias, cafes/bars, enotecas, rosticcerias, and gelaterias. This collection of more than 50 represents our favorites, all of which are moderately priced, with one or two exceptions, as noted.

We have organized these recommendations by major tourist attractions, such as the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio. On the Duomo side of the Arno, we recommend more than 35 trattorias, pizzerias, gelaterias, and restaurants. These include six in Fiesole and four in Settignano.

On the Oltrarno side of the Arno, we recommend 20, including four close to the Ponte Vecchio, some by Piazza Santo Spirito, and some by Piazza del Carmine. For each recommendation, we provide a brief description, including the address, phone number, and, for most, the day of closing.

Here is a sample description:

Osteria xxxx, Via xxx, in back of the Duomo. Closed Sunday. Surprisingly few tourists here, it quickly filled up with locals one evening. We had made a reservation; the owner teased me as the "Italiana" who had made the reservation (in my elementary Italian). This restaurant was extremely reasonable with a varied menu. The chicken that is grilled and flattened with a brick (pollo al mattone) is delicious.
