Recommended Hotels and B&Bs of Southern Italy
The hotels and B&Bs of Southern Italy recommended here (updated most recently in March 2009) are where we or our friends have stayed or visited, and, in some cases, have been recommended by other sources we trust. They all share the following characteristics: small, few larger than 30 rooms; excellent locations; attractively furnished bedrooms with excellent beds; gracious staff (most owner-managed); breakfast and bar service (coffee, tea, juice, wine, beer, and aperitifs, and sometimes light snacks); private baths in most, if not all, rooms; and excellent value.
Many of these hotels charge less than 150 euros per night for two (some less than 125 euros), while some are between 150 and 250 euros and a very few slightly higher. Hotel prices are often substantially reduced off-season, which, in Rome, is typically from November 15 to December 15 and from after New Year's Day to March 1, give or take a week or two on either end.
The recommended hotels and B&Bs are listed in the following order (the numbers indicate how many properties are recommended):

This hotel is in a prime location by the Spanish Steps. The spacious rooms are attractively decorated in a classic style and well-equipped (satellite TV, internet Wi-Fi, and minibar). The hotel rates are very reasonable for the location. The Hotel ... , a more expensive alternative, is in the same building.
